Adding texture and continuity to your mixed media paintings with Gelli papers

This little landscape painting was created using gelli printed paper tiles as my background. This process serves as adding color and pattern to a blank canvas as well as adding some interesting texture.

Gelatin plate prints

If you love scrapbooking, paper arts or mono printing you will love gelatin printing.

These pretty papers were created using a homemade permenant gelatin plate (you tube has a few videos and recipes for these) but you can also purchase a ready made Gell Printing Plate from amazon or local crafting stores.  These prints can be used in so many ways, from creating cards and tags to backgrounds in art journals or mixed media pieces, and because you are in essence mono-printing no 2 papers will ever look the same. These were created using hand cut stencils/stamps and basic craft paint. I have also used Golden Open's for some experiments and on hot dry days I have also added Debbie Travis glazing liquid (just what was on sale) to extend the working time of the basic craft paint. These are a few the turned out so well that they are now mounted and hung independently.

Mixed media demo on Gelli Printed Background

My dd and I have been busy printing gift tags, Christmas cards and background papers on our handmade Gelli plate. If you haven't had a chance to experiment with this type of monoprinting, you should! There is no right or wrong way, just ways that work out better than others. If you don't like something it is very easily covered up to create another dimension. We cut our own stamps (texture plates), basic stencils and used found objects to print a multitude of papers. This is one of my not so good prints that I turned into an inspirational mixed media piece. Gelli print, acrylic paint, oil pastel, ink, collage.

I love the way the paper does a lot of the work for you.

African Child Monoprint

I have been working on some monoprint ideas lately. I really like the graphic nature of these prints but I am more of a painterly type person. So combining the two this is my take on monotyping. This is a 5 * 7 inch using golden open acrylics and ink on illustration board. I would love to hear what you think.
