Mardi Gras Mask in Earths

I think im going to do a series of these as I love the mystery of masks and I would love to go to New Orleans during Mardi Gras. So here are the first stages of the one that I am working on now. Have a great day and Happy Painting!!  The finished painting can be found here. http://tampster1.blogspot.ca/2011/02/mask-in-earths.html

Down to the Minute

6 * 9 * 2.5 in treasure box acrylic on wood finished on the inside covers with complimentary decorative paper Somedays my life is really reflected in what I paint, and I dont even realise it until a piece is completed and then I stand back and go hmmmm... where did that come from. I am such a happy, passionate person that when I look at these somber/exhausted woman pieces I really question my inner peace so I am going to Try and paint happier woman from now on.. :) Well, we will see anyways ;)

Mountain Bluebird Acrylic Tutorial

I haven't posted a WIP is a long time so I thought I would stop by and show you this mountain bluebird painting I have been working on in between sewing projects. :) 9 * 12inch canvas board. Here are the first intial stages mostly just blocking in the large masses of color. starting to define the shape a bit more on the leaves and feather pattern Almost done! Went back in to reshape his head , eye and bottom breast a little. Added more shading under his body to tail feathers. I realized after photographing the last shot something was off - the lighting didnt match. So .... will be going back in today to try and give the tree more of a rounded shape by moving the shadows to the right side of the tree (hehehe oops... )and maybe pump up the highlights on some of the leaves. :)Till next time Happy Painting! 9 * 12 acrylic on canvas board signed and dated on both front and back Donated to Canadian Artists for the Poor

Man in Turban

2.75 * 2.75 inch Acrylic on stretched canvas SOLD A quick mini I did yesterday. I have tried for years to get a loose impressionistic style in my watercolors - to no avail. But with acrylics I can be so much more freer with my strokes - as if i dont like it I can always paint over it .. lol ;) Hope everyone has a safe and Happy New Year!

Hanging out Watercolor Portrait Tutorial

Another painting started .. i just love the expression on this teens face.. it represents that genre very well.(man i sound old all of a sudden) LOL Anyways just a simple pallette Skin tones - raw sienna, alizarin crimson, and ultramarine blue. Work slow .. develop your warms .. thin washes wet on wet and **let dry in between*** When you are waiting for the initial skin tones to dry move onto another area that does NOT touch and adjacent area that you have worked on. For the jacket I used just a simple wash of UMB and Burnt Sienna. Cobalt blue for a bounce of stronger color in the white shadows. Keep developing your skin tones. dampen a small area at a time, drop in your color and walk away. For the hat I used a light wash of perm. rose.. dry and then cobalt blue. Enhance the shadows and the stiching on the hat with a mix alizarin crimson and UMB that you have been using on the face. This will help to tie everythig together. I also used perm rose and cobalt underwashes on the s

Back to Basics - Caucasian color mixes

This is one of my most helpful tips - create color cards. I have about 100 of these tiny 5*7 reference cards that show different color mixes under different circumstances. Some for people, landscapes, floral etc. This one represents some caucasian skin tone color mixes. There are alot of people out there that use Cadmium red in their mixes but i find that it doesnt lend it self to glazing well and it is a pretty strong color. If I use it it is usually right at the end for detailing.

Stalking - adding the details

Just doodling and this what I came up with- I thought it was done after the first shot but it needed atmosphere to go along with mood. So i added some bushes in the front, and yet it was still missing something- so i went back in added the fence and deepened the shadows a little. Im thinking the shadow behind him is a little off it should be taller abd skinnier and sitting more off to the right a little - but oh well. One of the joys of watercolor is it is very hard to correct mistakes. These little paintings start out with a few simple Random brush strokes on a comination of wet/dry paper, I let them dry and them find pattern with in what was and work with it. That way your brain has the chance to switch over to the left and paint "what you see.. not what you think you see" Thank you Betty Edwards ;) These are my versions thumbnails.

Xander Watercolor Portrait Tutorial

HI all, I would like to introduce you to my youngest boy - i couldnt resist trying to capture the toothless grin that he is famous for. This started out ok with the line drawing and the diox purple underpainting - but now it has got to the ugly stage and i am forcing myself to work through it. His skin tones were painted using rose madder and yellow ochre. Way to yellow for him so i am going to add a layer or 2 of perm rose just to try and tone it out a bit. If there are any portrait artists out there I could really use some help trying to correct these issues. The next installment of Xander is here. It is starting to pop, I started this session by masking out his eyes and a few highlights in his hair before i proceeded to start adding a large wash of his skin tones focusing on transitions between the yellows and reds. After a few layers to build up tone, I went back in with a very light wash of cobalt blue and started "carving out" some shadows. Still looking p

How to paint a portrait - Skin tones

Another art card 2.5 * 3.5 inch just trying to keep my paints wet. For the skin tones I used a mix of yellow ochre and rose madder (yes i do know that it is a fugitive color) with some UMB thrown in for the shadows. The background was painted with hookers green deep and cerelean blue, and the shirt comprises of hookers green, yellow ochre and rose madder for the shadows.

March of the clowns Watercolor tutorial

Well I have been meaning to paint this for a while now, as you can see it is a little intimidting. In this watercolor demo I started with a detailed line drawing and then started bouncing around adding some local color to the clown faces with a wash of yellow ochre and cad red. After that dries i start placing some shadows using a thin wash of cobalt. The darks of the eyes are a mix of cad red, hunter green deep and paynes grey. Worked a little on the upper portion of the painting today. Really like the oranges against the blue. Just makes that litle portion sing. This painting reminds me of "paint by number" and with all the little variations i almost have to treat it that way. Day 4 and aprox 15 hours into it.. hmm i may be able to get this done by the end of the year. ;) This time around i worked a little adding my oranges (grumbacher red and gamboge) deeper values were made by adding a little burnt sienna. This will be heightened even more later on in the painting when
