Little Boy Watercolor Portrait demo

One of my students have asked me to post the demo that I did for a workshop on portraits from last week. This is a 2 hour painting (including dry time) using a limited pallette of quin gold, aliz crimson, Ultramarine blue, Burnt Sienna and Burnt Umber.  Stage 1: Mask out any highlights or if you are really confident you can paint around them. Due to the small size of this little man I masked. Stage 2 Sunshine : Wet your paper into the hairline, background, even the whites of the eyes. Wait until the sheen is gone from the paper and start dropping in your mid mix of quin gold. I love this color for 2 reasons. 1 it lifts easy, which comes in handy when laying down your road map  and 2 it adds your sunshine.   DRY Stage 3 I added a little BS and BU just to place a few darks in the eyes and hair. DRY Then mix up a light mix of aliz crimson. This is a high power, staining color and should be used with care. It is way easier to add color then to take it away. Wet his little face again a

The power of observation - Learning to Paint

So I was asked to teach a workshop this week, I knew that these students had been taking classes for the past 6 months in drawing and acrylics, so I was under the assumption that some of the basics would have been covered. You know... composition, value, brush work, even maybe a color wheel or color chart? Well now I know why they have been frusterated. Ok lets stop and think about this, I wish I would have years ago whe I first started painting. LOL Going from point A to point Z is not going to happen over night, but building a good foundation will only lead to monumental things. - wow that was deep - lol. The most valuable tool in my arsenol is a 2 inch square, or in my case just ripped off the corner of a piece of binder paper, piece of cheap paper with a whole punched out of it. Why you ask? K take that tiny piece of paper and place it anywhere on your reference.. Now ask yourself, Is this tomatoe really red, how do the many tones relate to eachother, what color are the shadows r

Tibetan Child

It is snowy and blustery and generally gross outside so I thought I would get this weeks painting polished up and posted. This handsome tibetan child is featured in his traditional garb which adds a huge pop of color to an otherwise dull painting. He measures 4.5 * 5.5 inch and painted on 140lb CP arches. Hope you enjoy. :) Click Here For Auction!

Handpainted Furniture Nautical Fishing Theme

So I have been redecorating the little kids rooms into bigger kids room and for the little man in my life I decided to go with a "Sail Away with Me" theme. We have had this icky side tabel in out possession for a long time and everytime I look at it all I saw was fish. So with a little elbow grease it was transformed from this to this I think it is just the perfect addition to his room. And the more it gets banged around - because you know it will being almost 3 - ;) the better it will look. Hope you enjoy Tammy

Rosie limited palette watercolor portrait

This is from my little bin of "it is starting to fall apart, so I will put it away for a later day." LOL I dont put alot of pieces in the big round "bin" because my husband just rescues them for his stash anyways. HAHAHAHA This is another watercolor portrait of a child using a limited color palette for her skin tones and just bumping up the color in the hair. Anyways here is this weeks project "Rosie" 2.5 * 3.5 inch watercolor on 140lb CP Arches Have a Happy Day :)

Rosie watercolor portrait

I've been gone forever it feels like. Around Halloween I started feeling a little run down and didn't really think about it - I have kids, lol. And over the past 3 years I have lost close to 60lbs, once again didn't think anything of it, isn't that what we all want. lol But at Christmas, it got to the point that I thought I should go see a doc. Which has now resulted in being booked in for 2 surgeries in the next few months? Not cool! But at least I know it is not all in my head. So if I am away for longer burst in the next few months, please bear with me. I will be back. :) Needless to say, I haven't been doing a lot of anything but resting lately. But in the few good hours that I have had in the last few weeks, I did whip up this precious little babe. I think I will call her Rosie. 2.5 * 3.5 ACEO Watercolor on 140lb CP Arches Happy Creating

Mermaid and Clown Fish Treasure Chest

Good morning everyone. So I have teamed up again with my neighbours for this project. As you may remember from past posts they are professional woodworkers and alot of our projects around here couldnt have been done without their assistance. Well they could have been, but they wouldnt look as pretty as they do. :) Times are tough for everyone this year so we bartered on these Chiristmas gifts. In exchange for building my daughter a chest, I would paint 3 of them up. These chests are so beautifully made with(maple wood, dove tailed and even a secret pop out compartment) so the design had to leave alot of open space and if possible a girly based timeless piece ( but had to have a clown fish and a mermaid ) for 2 and a boy based theme that had to incorporate an antique diving helmet and an anchor for the third. Hmmm. No pressure! :0 Oh and did I say that I only had a week to pull this off. :0 Well this is my first one... It still has to go back and get the hardward, leather strapping and

Mushroom Christmas Ornaments Inspired by Twine Balls

Inspired by some twine ornaments that I made up last week. 6 of these in 3 differant sizes for under $3 Gotta love that :) So I thought I would carry that rustic whimsy tree theme we have going this year and make up some wee-folk inspired mushroom ornaments. These are so very simple to make. What you need: styrofoam balls twigs or dowels cut to 1.5 inch long twine beads - any color small scrap of ribbon glue gun Step 1: Cut aprox 1/3 off the bottom of the ball Step 2: Fold ribbon in 1/2 and insert into a small hole in the top for hanging, glue the twig into the bottom. Step 3: Starting at the top, glue a starting point with your twine. and start wrapping glueing as you go. Keep wrapping all the way under the cap. Once you get to the bottom just cut, tuck and glue. Step 4: Add your embellishments. I simply glued some med sized beads for a little color, But you could go in with some acrylic paint and also add color that way. I found these cute ladybug thumbtacks and thought
